Orange and Basil for Your Skin? We Say, YES!

So often we forget that the same ingredients that bring our food taste and beautiful aromas, also care for our skin. For instance, in our amazing pasta recipe you will benefit from both Orange and Basil.

Key Ingredients

Orange
Not only is orange full of vitamin C, but also, this juicy and delicious citrus is a great skin brightener and exfoliator. Being high in anti-oxidants, orange essential fights free radical damage, tones and even renews and strengthens sensitive skin.

Known as a very “happy” scent, Orange is used in aromatherapy to lift spirits. Wondered why you always felt a little happy when the fragrance of fresh oranges wafted nearby? A study conducted by a Japanese university even found that orange oil can reduce the amount of anti-depressants used for those being treated by depression.

Orange Essential Oil contains 85-95% limonene? It has the highest level of d-limonene next to grapefruit oil!

Limonene (d-limonene) protects against pancreatic, stomach, colon, skin, and liver cancers. D-limonene is contained in the peels of citrus fruits such as grapefruit, tangerine and lemon.

Energize and tone your skin with essential oils of orange. It will bring that healthy glow while lifting your spirits!



Basil
Basil oil is a good source of Vitamin A, magnesium, potassium, iron, and calcium. In recipes (as the one below) Basil improves digestion as well.

The benefits do not end there. The essential oil of Basil known to bring luster to sallow and dull skin. Its anti-septic and anti-bacterial properties help heal and prevent minor blemishes and skin infections.

A study published in the journal Biomedica claims that basil essential oil, coupled with orange may aid in the treatment of acne.

Emotionally and spiritually, basil essential oil is used in aromatherapy to help deal with feelings of anxiety, fear, or nervousness, and has been said to be the oil of "renewal".



The Recipe

Made from fresh ingredients at your local farmer’s market and some wine (it doesn’t take much and leaves some for a mid-week toast!)

Ingredients

    • 3 cups of your favorite pasta (recommend Penne Rigate, Fusilli, bow-tie or Rigatoni)
    • 1 orange
    • ½ cup white wine
    • 4 cloves garlic crushed
    • ½ onion chopped
    • Fresh basil
    • 1 cup chopped mushrooms
    • 2 cups cherry tomatoes
    • Salt to taste
    • Crushed red pepper
    • Olive oil
    • Italian seasoning (optional)
    • Cheese – aged cheddar or gruyere

Method

    • Boil pasta (al dente) – add pasta to boiling water, add some salt and a little olive oil and cook for 11 minutes. Set aside
    • In a large saucepan, add chopped onions and sauté
    • When onions are translucent, add mushrooms and sauté mushrooms until they are a touch golden brown
    • Add crushed red pepper and salt
    • Add Italian seasonings (this is optional)
    • Add garlic and wine and squeeze the juice of the orange onto the pan
    • Let it cook down, stirring occasionally for about 8-10 minutes
    • Toss in the cherry tomatoes and cook a little more
    • Add fresh basil
    • Add pasta to the pan and toss around until pasta is coated with the sauce
    • Grate some cheese and serve!
