Lemon

lemon essential oil benefits for skin

This popular citrus originated in south-east Asia and is now grown extensively in hot climates around the Mediterranean and in California. Its white flowers are exquisitely scented and its essence is used widely in perfumery. Lemon is second only to orange in its production and use.

Although introduced to Europe in the Middle Ages, Lemon was known to the ancient Greeks and Romans who used it widely to fragrance clothes and as a cleaning agent. The therapeutic properties of lemons were explored and realized in the renaissance period in Europe. Indoctrinated in apothecaries for digestive, detoxifying and uplifting qualities, they reached the height of their salutary fame when the British navy used them to counteract the effects of scurvy.

More recently, lemons are used extensively as a stimulating ingredient in drinks, food, cleansers, perfumes and definitely in skin care.
