Lemon Balm
Lemon Balm is a wonderful lush green herb whose oil has calming, soothing, healing and tightening effects on the skin, whilst also stimulating circulation and promoting cellular regeneration.
Distilled from the flowering tops of the plant as well as the leaves, the highly prized Lemon Balm essential oil has a rich, clean and deeply calming aroma. A favourite plant of honeybees, its scientific name includes “Melissa”, derived from the Greek word for bee. It is one of the most expensive essential oils as it takes a high volume of lemon balm to get a small quantity of the essential oil. Over 2 lbs. (almost 1 kg) of lemon balm herb yields only 0.5 ml of oil.
Lemon balm was widely used by the ancient Greeks and Romans to treat a multitude of ailments. Owing to its medicinal, aromatic and uplifting qualities, this delightfully scented herb was frequently strewn across floors or amongst church pews to freshen up rooms.
Skincare
The skin benefits of Lemon balm go beyond being anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial like most of its counterparts. Its constituent organic compounds, caffeic acid and ferulic acid, penetrate the top layers of the epidermis to provide protection against UV damage and stimulate cellular regeneration. Lemon balm is also high in flavonoids that provide intense anti-oxidant properties.
Lemon Balm can be used for all skin types and particularly for mature and sensitive skin. Not only does a waft of this truly opulent oil seduce your senses, but, applied topically, it is a skin toning and smoothing indulgence.
