Need an Energy Boost? These Yoga Poses Will Help
The New Year is off to a good start, but if you need a little pick-me-up, try adding these beginner yoga poses that boost energy to your weekly workout routine.
Stand with your left foot forward and knee bent. Turn your right foot to a 90-degree angle while keeping the knee straight. Lift your arms parallel to the floor and in line with your legs, palms face down. Turn your head to look at your left hand. Hold for several seconds and switch sides for an even stretch.
Stand with your feet together and hands in prayer position. Lift your right foot and rest it as high on your thigh as you can. Extend your hands above your head to finish the pose. Switch sides and keep practicing to improve your balance.
In addition to boosting energy, cat-cow pose is also great for stretching an achy back. To start, kneel on all fours. Arch your lower back so that your spin dips and your stomach is close to the floor, while tilting your head up so that you're looking at the ceiling. This is the cow pose. Be sure to inhale deeply during this pose, filling the lungs complete.
To move to cat pose, arch the back in the opposite direction of cow pose so that your back is arched upward like a startled cat and your head is hanging down towards the ground. Be sure to exhale and completely empty your lungs during this pose.
You'll want to alternate between these poses several times to relieve tension. For more on how to properly perform these poses, visit Yoga Outlet.
Assume a squat position with your hands on the ground. Move your hands forward, straighten your legs and push your rear into the air so your body creates an upside-down V. Your feet and hands should be hip-distance apart.
Lie face down with straight legs. Arch your back and lift your chest off the floor, supporting your upper body with your hands on the ground under your shoulders. Feel the stretch in your abs as your lungs open up and help you breathe more deeply.
