Easier said than done, we know! But stress takes a toll on nearly every part of your body, including your skin. In a study conducted at Stanford University, researchers found that during exam time, students who felt stressed had more severe acne breakouts than did those under less pressure.
Stress increases the body’s production of hormones such as cortisol, which can make skin oilier and decrease its ability to fight off acne-causing bacteria, says Lisa Donofrio, an associate clinical professor of dermatology at the Yale University School of Medicine.
To keep that frazzled feeling under control, regularly practice stress-management techniques, like yoga, deep breathing, sound therapy, aromatherapy, and meditation. This “can help conditions such as acne, psoriasis, rosacea, and seborrhea,” Donofrio says.
Square Breathing: Shake off anxiety and clear your head.
Do you know that when you are stressed or hyper focused – your breathing can become very shallow – taking a moment to breathe deeply can completely alter your stress levels.
- To begin square breathing, sit in a comfortable, upright position on the floor or in a chair. Inhale through your nose for four counts (1, 2, 3, 4). Hold that breath in for four counts. Exhale through your nose for four counts. Hold that breath out for four counts. That’s one cycle.
- Repeat 10 times, going at your own pace: Inhale 2, 3, 4. Hold 2, 3, 4. Exhale, 2, 3 4. Hold, 2, 3, 4.
Shoulder stretch: Release neck and shoulder tension.
Interlace your fingers, and raise your arms above your head, with your palms facing upwards. Try to keep your arms in line with your ears, while you look straight ahead and relax your shoulder blades down your back (don’t shrug them up!) Hold for five full breaths in and out through your nose. Let your arms fall down to your sides, roll your shoulders backwards and forwards a few times, then repeat the stretch, holding for five full breaths.
Heart opener: Counteract the concave chest of computer hunching.
Standing with your feet hip-distance apart, reach your hands behind you, clasping them together in a fist at the base of your back. Looking straight ahead, lift your clasped hands as high as you can behind you, pulling your shoulder blades together. (If you want more of a stretch, you can fold over your legs, and let gravity pull your clasped hands toward the floor.) Hold for five full breaths.
Aromatherapy
The inhaled aroma from essential oils is widely believed to stimulate brain function. Essential oils can also be absorbed through the skin, where they travel through the bloodstream and can promote whole-body healing.
- For example, Orange essential oil is energizing. Spritzing this citrus on your face will lift your spirits immediately.
- Lavender is calming and soothing. Misting your pillow with Lavender water can relax your mind and promote deep sleep
- Lemon Balm essential oil is deeply relaxing and an anti-depressant. Breathing in some Lemon Balm can control anxiety and promote spiritual healing
- The seductive fragrance of Damask Rose can heal, uplift spirits and boost self esteem.
